Words~Wood just gets better with age. The colour gets richer, the feel gets smoother, it becomes part of your life. Every piece of wood is different, with grain and colour variations and the odd knot. This means that your table is different to everyone else’s table.

Our furniture is made from hard woods such as cherry, walnut, oak and maple. These are some of the finest woods around, and have been used by furniture makers for centuries. They have an enduring quality and a classic look that suits any home – be it modern or traditional.

We try to use solid wood in our furniture wherever we can. However, because solid wood expands and contracts, it is impossible to use it absolutely everywhere. We are only too pleased to answer any questions you may have about specific items in our ranges and about the various characteristics of the woods we offer.

Our painted wood is coated using Farrow & Ball White Tie. We can colour match if you get in touch but this will incur an additional charge.

Our wooden furniture has the following finishes, depending on range.

Lacquer
Unless otherwise stated, our wood furniture comes with a lacquered finish. This is a clear, durable finish that protects the wood while allowing the natural colour and grain to show through. During the first weeks after delivery, take extra care with your furniture as the lacquer surface may still be hardening. Thereafter, the finish is very low maintenance and stain resistant. It can be wiped clean with a slightly damp cloth or, if you prefer a more glossy look, with a regular non-silicone and ammonia-free furniture polish, such as Pledge. Severe damage to the surface can be addressed with expert advice.

Wax
Wax is one of the most traditional means of protecting and enhancing the surface of wooden furniture. You should re-wax your furniture once every six months or when it appears dry. Application of wax will refresh your furniture so that is assumes a rich colour and a smooth surface. However, spillages should always be cleaned up as soon as possible. Any good furniture wax can be used - please follow instructions carefully and pay particular regard to safety. Marks and scratches can be removed using very fine steel wool or sandpaper, gently working with the grain, followed by re-waxing (this may produce a temporary colour difference).

Oil
Hand oiling wooden furniture produces a silky finish. It does not totally seal the surface so spillages should be cleaned up as soon as possible. Extra resilience can be achieved by re-oiling. We recommend you do this shortly after receiving your furniture, again after two weeks and then at three to six month intervals. This may need doing more frequently in dry, centrally-heated environments.
